The menus have been designed to offer quick access to the most often used features of the camera. The lightweight and highly durable magnesium alloy body features enhanced sealing to prevent the intrusion of rain drops and dust and the shutter and mirror box assemblies have been field proven to be very reliable. The camera’s large controls and buttons are positioned for intuitive control that frees the photographer to concentrate on composition. Regardless of camera orientation, operation remains consistently comfortable with virtually the same access to primary controls.

Nikon’s new generation system LSI greatly improves the precision of processing over previous schemes. With optimized distribution of analog and digital white balance gain, another first, the new engine produces smoother gradations with consistent and smooth transitions, all with exceptionally pure color rendition. The D1X is capable of capturing up to 9 full resolution images at 3 frames per second. When we first saw the Nikon D1 in prototype we were impressed and eager to test the camera, but had to wait three long months to get one for a proper review, such was the demand on the few cameras in the country. We all have high expectations from Nikon but were still surprised by the D1. This is some camera! The D1 is already making quite an impact in the professional photographic community. Anyone who has used Nikon Single Lens Reflex (SLR) cameras will find this camera quite familiar since it is the digital brother of the F100 film camera and has the look and feel of a film camera.

Coming some 18 months after the advent first of the Kodak/Canon DCS digital cameras, Nikon has been slow to meet the challenge with a top end professional digital camera, but by setting the price of the D1 very low in comparison to the competition, and by producing such a remarkable product, Nikon has signalled war as it battles to regain market share in the professional digital camera market.

Big Burst
Nikon has achieved a remarkable burst rate of 4.5 frames per second in the D1 with a large buffer to hold 21 compressed frames before refresh is necessary. This feature will be very attractive to editorial and sport photographers who need to shoot very fast sequences and can't wait around for a camera to get its act together. Add this to excellent image quality, advanced auto focus, sophisticated metering, accurate automatic white balance and superb Nikon optics and you have a formidable camera.

Remove the lens and raise the mirror to reveal the CCD sensor behind the cyan coloured lithium niobate (LiNB) low-pass filter which blocks infrared wavelengths.

Perhaps the most important thing about any digital camera is image quality and it's in this area that D1 really shines. The D1s 23.7 x 15.6 mm CCD sensor with an effective pixel count of 2012 x 1324 produces an RGB image with 2000 x 1312 pixels, capable of excellent reproduction in the A4 to A3 range. Nikon has achieved very good quality at quite high sensitivity ratings. The camera can be set at ISO 200, 400, 800 and 1,600 plus custom settings at 3,200 and 6,400. As one would expect, noise appears with speed increases but there is very little evidence of noise even at ISO 800 and certainly not the noise one would see on film at the same rating. We shot mostly at ISO 400 which gave great results.
Just in front of the CCD is an ultra-thin lithium niobate (LiNB) low-pass filter which acts as an anti-aliasing device and also cuts infrared rays. This makes for a smooth tonal range and almost no moiré detectable in the captured images

Complete with five automatic Scene modes, One-Touch Upload button and a built- in Speedlight featuring Red-eye reduction, Automatic, Anytime Flash, Flash Cancel and Slow Sync modes. Its Movie mode allows you to capture up to 20 seconds of motion video. The new CoolPix 950 has proven itself to be a worthy successor to the most popular digital camera ever built, the Nikon CoolPix 900. The enhancements in picture quality, features, and construction make the 950 even better than its excellent predecessor. It's hard to believe the camera has all these 'bells & whistles', and I can still slip it into my pocket!

The first thing I noticed when I turned the camera on was the actual (real time) f-stop and shutter speed values displayed in the lower left hand corner of the LCD screen, much like what you'd see through the viewfinder of a high quality 35mm SLR camera... Yes!!!

The camera starts up fast, switches modes fast, and processes fast - all characteristics you need when time is of the essence for grabbing a candid shot opportunity.

The pictures are a bit sharper and the colors a bit more saturated than the CoolPix 900. Color tones appear to be "right on". Basically, nothing was lost in the already excellent picture quality with the new model, and significant gains were made in areas that often required some "tweaking" with the original CoolPix 900.

And for low light shooting, the easily adjustable ISO puts the shutter and aperture balance into a comfortable range.

The Coolpix 800 is a very good digital camera, it takes pictures that equal the more costly Nikon 950. For those just getting into digital photography it offers a relatively inexpensive way to enjoy excellent quality images capable of generating photo-quality 8x10-inch prints with today's inkjet printers.

It is small enough and light enough to be easily carried all day in your hand or in your pocket. The engineers have managed to squeeze out 25-35% better battery life without sacrificing any major features, they just used a slightly smaller LCD.

The Nikon Coolpix 990 is the first of the new wave of 3.34-megapixel resolution digital cameras. It retains the best features of the Coolpix 950 like the razor sharp Nikkor 3x zoom lens, the closest macro capability of any digicam, the highly durable magnesium alloy body and the unique swiveling lens design.

It now includes many of the user-requested improvements (CF card slot on side, USB connectivity, improved battery life, better LCD) and adds powerful new features like multizone autofocus, autoexposure bracketing, Flexible Program mode and a 7-blade iris diaphragm for real depth of field control.

The 990's 3.34 megapixel CCD delivers a non-interpolated image resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels with an uncompressed TIFF image file of just under 10MB in size. Recording modes include still image capture at up to 2 frames per second in full resolution, 320 x 240 QVGA at 30 frames per second and a new movie mode that shoots 40 seconds of (silent) QVGA Motion-JPEG at 15 fps.

Nikon has finally answered the question of how to keep the lens cap with the camera. They now include a "lens string" that slips around the joint between the two sections of the camera.

The Coolpix 990 has an exclusive Multi-Area autofocus mode for quick composition without interruption. It searches the 5 zones for closest subject or sharpest subject. It is a direct descendant of Nikon pro film and D1 digital SLR cameras.

The 990 also features a 50-step manual focus, Nikon’s 256 element Matrix metering and new 256 element Matrix white balance system to insure the best possible exposure and color balance in every shot.

New is a 7-blade iris diaphragm for true depth of field control and versatile exposure control with four exposure modes:

In the "P"rogrammed automatic mode there are more options available via the Flexible Program mode. By rotating the command dial the "P" changes to a "P*" and each click brings up a different combination of shutter speed and aperture values that yield the same exposure.

The 990 has a USB 1.1 interface which makes downloading those large image files to a PC or Mac a snap. This is a dual I/O port supporting both USB and serial RS-232 connections. Nikon does not supply a serial port cable and the NikonView software is not capable of controlling the camera other than image downloads. The 990 now has user-selectable video output (NTSC or PAL). This eliminates the need to build two different camera models but the 990 will come in two different color schemes. The North American cameras will be charcoal grey with a purple colored finger grip (as shown here), the European models will be the black and red scheme used on the Coolpix 950's.

Once again, Nikon has upped the ante in the world of digital cameras with the introduction of the Coolpix 5000. Its 5-megapixel sensor, 28-85mm zoom lens, and extensive controls make this a great choice for discriminating photographers seeking a digital camera with filmlike quality and SLR-style manual controls.

In a departure from previous flagship Coolpix models, the 5000 is very compact (much smaller than the older 900-series models) and looks more or less like a traditional point-and-shoot. It does not employ the trademark Coolpix swiveling-lens design; instead, on this model, it's the LCD display that does the swiveling. The screen can be flipped out from the camera body and rotated for easy viewing from any shooting angle--it even works for a self-portrait. An added bonus to this design is the ability to tuck the vulnerable display inward for protection when the camera is not in use. Of course, images can also be composed by looking through the traditional optical viewfinder.

The Coolpix 5000 features a 3x zoom lens--the most common power for zoom digital cameras. It's the range that sets the Coolpix apart--its widest setting is an unusually wide 28mm, perfectly matching the wide-angle setting on most SLR cameras. Almost every other digital camera's wide-angle starts at 35 or 38mm. The all-glass lens features nine elements in seven groups.

Power is provided by a proprietary lithium-ion EN-EL1 battery rated for approximately 100 minutes of use (battery and charger are included). If you're worried about getting caught in the middle of nowhere with a dead battery, the camera also uses a standard disposable lithium 2CR5 camera battery. Unused lithium batteries hold their power for years, so you'll probably want to toss one of these into your camera bag as a backup. For hardcore photographers, there's also an optional power pack/hand grip that uses six AA batteries and offers several times the power capacity of the rechargeable pack.

Shutter lag--the delay between the time you press the button and the moment the camera actually captures the photo--is a problem with most digital cameras, and the Coolpix 5000 is no exception. The camera can take over a second to snap your picture after pressing the button, which can be an unacceptably long time, especially if you're trying to take a picture of a quick-moving subject. Most of this delay can be eliminated by prefocusing--composing your shot, then pressing the shutter button halfway down to allow the camera to adjust the focus and metering. When you're ready to take the picture, press the button the rest of the way down, and the shutter will snap almost instantly.

Movie mode captures movie clips with audio at resolutions of 320 x 240 pixels at approximately 15 frames per second for up to 40 seconds. This feature won't replace your camcorder, but it's perfect for when you just want to capture a quick movie and e-mail it to a friend or relative.

Vibration Reduction (VR)
Nikon's VR (Vibration Reduction) technology is an exciting feature that allows sharp photographs to be taken when the camera cannot be held perfectly still. Vibration Reduction offers the ability to shoot at shutter speeds of more than three stops (or eight times) slower, without the risk of camera vibrations blurring your image. Camera shake occurs when the small movements of your hands cause an image to blur when the shutter is released. The Coolpix 8700 is PictBridge compatible, which enables you to transfer pictures from your digital camera to your printer, without a PC or image-editing software. All PictBridge devices share three basic features: camera-to-printer connecting, single-image printing, and uniform error messages (in case something goes wrong)

Storage and Transfer
Images and video are stored on CompactFlash memory cards (Type I/II), and the Coolpix 8700 is compatible with MicroDrives (no memory card is included with this package). The Coolpix 3100 has an optical viewfinder and a 1.5-in., 110,000-dot, low-temp. polysilicon TFT LCD screen on the back of the camera. The LCD screen offers a live preview in capture mode, and displays recorded images in playback. The LCD screen brightness level can be adjusted depending on viewing conditions. (5 steps)

The Coolpix 3100 incorporates an automatic built-in flash. There are four flash modes available: Auto, Flash On, Flash Off, Red-Eye Reduction. The flash shooting distance range is approximately 0.4 - 3.0m at the wideangle setting and approximately 0.4 - 1.7m at the telephoto setting.

If you need extra flash coverage, the optional Nikon SB-30 Speedlight can be used as a stand alone external flash in wireless mode. The SB-30 Speedlight can also be attached to the Coolpix 3100 with the the optional Nikon SK-9 flash bracket. (The SB-30 flash should be set to Wireless Slave A).

Auto Focus
The Coolpix 3100 employs a TTL auto 5-area autofocus system. In terms of close focusing capability, the Coolpix 3100 offers an exceptional macro close-up mode down to a mere 4cm from your subject.
Additionally, the Coolpix 3100 incorporates a handy "Best Shot Selector" (BSS) mode, which lets you capture sharp handheld exposures at shutter times as long as 1/2 second. Ideal for typical close-up situations where light can be a limiting factor.
Even though the camera does not feature an autofocus (AF) assist light, in our tests the Nikon Coolpix 3100 focused well under a variety of low lighting conditions.

256-segment Matrix Metering and Multi Auto White Balance
The Coolpix 3100 incorporates Nikon's exclusive 256-Segment Matrix metering system (linked to the active AF area), which does a very good job at handling exposure under a variety of different lighting conditions.
When using one of the camera's Scene modes, the camera will automatically employ either center-weighted, spot or spot AF area metering. If desired, exposure compensation can be selected in auto and manual mode (+/- 2 EV in 1/3 step increments).
The camera's adjustable White Balance settings include: Auto, Fine (daylight), Incandescent, Fluorescent, Cloudy, Speedlight, or Preset (which allows you to manually adjust the white balance).
The ISO sensitivity of the Coolpix 3100 is by default set to approximately 50 ISO (with an Auto gain equal to 100-200 ISO under lower light conditions).

Image Quality/Size
The Coolpix 3100 features new names for setting the desired resolution capture size; High, Normal, PC screen, TV screen. A feature which allows even first-time digital users to envision how they'll use image quality/size.The camera stores images to a CompactFlash card (Type I), and a 16MB starter card is packaged with the camera.

One-touch playback function
A simple press of the play button activates playback mode, in which the LCD monitor shows the last image captured by the camera -- It's that simple. Another press of the play button returns the camera to shooting mode. In addition, pressing and holding down the play button when the power is off will start the camera in play mode.

Transfer Button
When the camera is connected to a computer via a USB cable, the play button acts as the 'transfer' button enabling automatic transfer of images stored in the camera. Conclusion

The Coolpix 3100 has all the elements, it's small, very light, has good ergonomics (the handgrip really makes a difference) and a 3x optical zoom lens. The camera is easy to use, handle and is quick to respond. The camera's compact body fits easily in a pocket for carry-anywhere portability.

Shooting is simplified by general-use AUTO Mode. The new Nikon exclusive Scene Assistance function (tied to the four main scene modes) provides for perfectly composed pictures, and allow users to capture the essence of every situation and fully experience the fun of digital photography.

The 3100 also carries the Coolpix badge which is a kind of quality assurance for potential buyers. The Coolpix 3100 provides excellent optical performance overall. Coupled with Nikon's image-processing algorithm, pictures from the camera exhibit vibrant color, contrast and clarity.
I was certainly pleased with the results of the three 8" x 10" test images that I printed on an Epson 2200 Photo quality printer. (Epson Photo Glossy Paper) The camera's Auto White Balance works very well, and colors are nicely saturated.

Where the Coolpix 3100 really wins is in its combination of size, features, and image quality. If you are looking for a great little 3 megapixel camera, the Nikon Coolpix 3100 certainly delivers.

Nikon revives the swiveling lens design that made the early year Coolpix cameras famous for ease of use. We had been told late in 2002 that the Coolpix 4500 would be the last of the "swivelers," but thankfully Nikon has decided to do it again.

The Coolpix S4
have a features a powerful 10x optical zoom, six megapixels of resolution and a large 2.5-inch LCD, all housed in a compact body that fits into a shirt pocket. Nikon Coolpix S3 digital camera review
Once again, last September 2005, Nikon introduced a stylishly designed digital camera; the Nikon Coolpix S3. During the IFA 2005 press conference the Nikon S3 was presented as the successor of the Coolpix S1 and S2, which were also introduced this year. Nikon continued with the same design, the reactions to it are extremely positive, so why change a successful concept? The Nikon S3 has a beautiful appearance, the camera is neatly finished and thanks to the material used, aluminium, the quality feeling remains. The Nikon Coolpix measures a mere 19.7mm and despite the compact size, the camera accommodates a small internal optical zoom with a range of 35-105mm (equivalent to a 35mm camera).

Nikon S3 - Well arranged menu
Besides the design Nikon has also taken into account the consumer's experiences in practice. Despite the many icons on the back of the camera, the amount of buttons is kept small. As a user you will easily find your way through the menu. The menu is very well arranged and navigating doesn't cause any problems. In fact, the camera is built in a way that the manual is not needed at first instance, the operation is logical and straightforward. The Nikon S3 camera works fully automatic and is supported by an enhanced collection of pre-programmed scenes and intelligent software. This software adds enormously to the user friendliness. How about auto red eye correction or AF focus priority on faces? The menu is rendered on a large size 2.5-inch monitor; the indispensable feature on current digital cameras and digital photography. We predict that the future generation digital cameras will depend more and more on the monitor. The monitor will become more 'intelligent' and larger to be able to experience the 'golden moment' (reproduction of the own memory) as intensively as possible. The optical viewfinder seems to have said goodbye for good!

Nikon Coolpix S3 housing - Design
The version of the camera that I received has a white housing, but the camera is also available in platinum/silver or matte black, this differs per region. Although the design is already familiar to us for nearly a year now, the renewed acquaintance still is positive. the design may be called successful. This year seems to become the year of design cameras; around us we notice various designs being introduced from 5 - 8 Megapixels. The Nikon design that first turned up this year is a strong design, it has its own face and can be called a true eye-catcher.

Nikon Coolpix S3 review
The Nikon S3 is equipped with an image sensor delivering 6 Megapixels of resolution which is more than sufficient for the average consumer to reach a nice print. The compact size and the beautifully finished housing make you grab the camera to take it with you when leaving home. And that is the power of this light compact camera; take it with you wherever you go, shoot everything around you and enjoy the end result. The Coolpix S3 camera was used by us in practice for a short period of time. The S3 camera withstood every curious glance with pride. It's remarkable to see that comments from the public always come with a camera designed like this one, a well figured out marketing concept… However; somehow we managed to get away from the nosy crowd to use the camera in practice. Image Quality
The Coolpix S3 produced a fairly standard set of pictures for this type of camera. The outdoor scenic type photos were the best with lively colours and the images were sharply focused. Indoors the camera worked fairly well but I have produced better results with other slimline digital cameras.

Taking a look at the colour test this camera produced a result just about identical to those produced by other Nikon digital cameras. The colours are not as vivid as those produced by Canon and Sony digital cameras but you may feel that they have a slightly more natural feel to them.

Moving indoors the shot taken of bottles in more or less complete darkness is a very good attempt by the camera. Despite the conditions the picture is sharply focused and very well lit. A good attempt is made at the indoor portrait as well, but the shot falls somne way short of perfection. On a positive note there is no red eye that I can see in the picture.

Shutter Lag and Recycling Times
Shutter lag is the time it takes to take each picture. With digital cameras there can be a delay between clicking the shutter button and the photo being captured. This can lead to missing the picture you wanted. Shutter lag is a major problem if you are taking shots of moving subjects such as animals, sports scenes and children.

We managed to take a single shot in 0.45 seconds. This is a slightly slow time. It took 13.08 seconds to take five consecutive shots. This works out at a rate of one photo every 2.61 seconds. These times are noticeably slower than those recorded by ultra compact digital cameras from Casio, Sony and Pentax.

Features
The 3x optical zoom lens has a focal length equivalent to 35 - 105mm in 35mm format. The lens is the non protruding type. The aperture ranges from f3 to f5.4. There is also a 4x digital zoom feature. For close up work the camera can focus from 4cms away.

For composing photos there is a 2.5 inch LCD screen. This is made up around 110,000 pixels. There is a brightness control to help in low light and bright conditions. There is no viewfinder.

To help take the best possible shot in different settings there are a wide range of scene modes. All you need to do is select the most appropriate mode and the camera will then use the optimum settings. The scene modes available are Portrait, Landscape, Sports, Night portrait), Scene (Party/Indoor, Beach/Snow, Sunset, Dusk/Dawn, Night landscape, Close up, Museum, Fireworks show, Copy, Back light and Underwater. A number of the scene modes provide further help. For example in portrait mode there are extra settings for someone standing left of centre and for a couple. There is also a Panorama assist mode.

The built in flash unit has a maximum range of 2.5m. This drops down to around 1.4m when the zoom lens is in use. This is a very limited flash range. Flash modes are Auto, Red-eye Reduction Auto (In-Camera Red-Eye Fix), Anytime Flash, Flash Cancel and Slow sync.

For when you would like to appear in the photo there is a ten second self timer. Different colour effects can be added to a photo. The effects you can choose from are black and white, sepia, vivid and cyanotype.

If you have taken a photo that turns out darker than you would like there is a facility called D lighting. This allows you to brighten a photo already taken in the camera. I must admit when I tested this it led to over bright photos and also a loss of quality in the shot.

Movies can be captured at a maximum resolution of 640 x 480. The maximum speed of each movie is 15 frames per second. Sound can be recorded with the movies. The duration is only limited by the space available on the memory card.

The camera can also be used as a voice recoreder.

Shutter speeds range from 2-1/350 seconds. There are white balance controls for daylight, incandescent, fluorescent, cloudy, flash and a custom setting, exposure compensation between +2 and -2, a best shot selector and sensitivity of automatic, 50, 100, 200 and 400.

Other advanced features include a continuous shooting mode that can take shots at a rate of 1.8 frames per second. You can also use a multi shot setting that allows you to takes 16 shots and creates a single photo from them. There is also a time lapse movie. This allows you to set a delay time and a picture is then taken accordingly. This is often used for taking a sequence of shots of a flower opening or clouds passing across the sky.

This camera can be used underwater by buying a waterproof case. The case is named WP-CP5.

Nikon supplies all the necessary cables and software to connect the Coolpix S3 to a computer, PictBridge computer and a television set.

Ease of Use
One great feature of the Coolpix S3 is its help button. The help button explains to you what each of the menu items do. This ensures you select the correct option. It is also a great way to learn about the camera's capabilities. You can also choose between a text or icon based menu.

Even without the help button the Coolpix S3 would be an easy-to-use camera. The menus are well defined and easy to understand. You will find all the main control buttons situated on the back of the camera. There are buttons for zooming in and out, setting the self timer, changing the flash mode, reviewing images, deleting images, selecting scene modes and movie mode. All in all this was a pretty straightforward digital camera.

Coast
You can pick up a Nikon Coolpix S3 for around £225. This compares to around £225 for a Pentax Optio S6, £225 for a Sony DSC T5 and £215 for a Canon IXUS 55.

As you can see there is more or less nothing to choose on terms of price between these ultra compact digital cameras. It is worth noting that only the Optio S6 and the Coolpix S3 are six megapixel models. The other two only have five.

Style
The Coolpix S3 is a typical ultra compact digital camera. It is slim rectangular shape. The front of this camera is very plain though compared to other models. You can select either a silver, white or black model. It has dimensions of 89.9 x 57.5 x 19.7mm and weighs in at 118g.

Power is supplied by a rechargeable lithium ion battery. Both the battery and a cradle for charging are supplied with the camera. Nikon estimates the Coolpix S3 can take around 190 photos before the battery needs to be recharged.

Images are stored on SD cards. A card is not supplied with the camera as there are 12mb of storage built into the camera itself. I was able to take 15 shots before the memory was full. This was using the camera's standard settings. It is therefore well worth considering buying a high capacity memory card to go with the Coolpix S3. Click here to save money on SD cards.

Nikon has announced its second ultra-slim camera, the weatherproof Coolpix S2. It is very similar to the Coolpix S1; the only differences seem to be purely cosmetic. The most obvious difference on the 5.1 megapixel camera is that it features a sliding lens. It will only be available in silver and is slightly bigger and heavier than the S1. It will also have a different docking station (supplied). Other similarities include the same control layout, a 2.5-inch LCD, SD memory slot with 12MB internal memory and 35-105 mm equiv. zoom lens. It will be available in early summer priced around US$429 (approx €448/£299).

The COOLPIX S2 boasts stylish good looks, bright 2.5 -inch LCD screen, slim dimensions – it’s just 22mm deep – and a range of innovative, highly intelligent Nikon functions that actually make pictures more attractive in-camera.

Nikon Coolpix S1 digital camera review
Nikon introduced a small digital design camera in the first quarter of this year: the Nikon Coolpix S1. This model is completely newly developed and has a very classy appearance. The Nikon S1 is available in the colours Pure Silver and Ebony Black. The material used for the housing of the camera is aluminium and is beautifully finished. The new Nikon Coolpix S1 has a very compact size and is ultra flat with only 19.7 mm. Despite its slim body, the camera is equipped with a 3x optical zoom lens that doesn't extend, like we have seen on other thin digital cameras. This means we find an internal zoom lens with a 3x optical range on this Nikon digital camera.

Nikon Coolpix S1 - Stylish design
I have to admit that it was love at first sight when I received the black version of the Nikon S1, because of its beautiful design. We were already impressed by the stylish Fujifilm FinePix Z1, but the Nikon Coolpix S1 adds a little something. The designer team of Nikon has really done a wonderful job, they have worked to the utmost to design a real eye-catcher and they did it! Beautifully curved lines, a sleek ebony black aluminium housing with nicely hidden covers, impressive!

Nikon S1 camera - User friendliness
Besides paying attention to the design, also the operation of the camera and how the camera works is important. The Nikon Coolpix S1 is designed with emphasis on convenience. At first this seems a contradiction when looking at the rather busy back of the camera, but soon you will find out that navigating through the menu and using the buttons will come to you naturally, and intuitively. The camera works fully automatically and is equipped with a number of Scene modes to give the user a hand in almost any thinkable situation. The menu is beautifully rendered on the bright 2.5 inch size monitor, which made the optical viewfinder disappear. It seems to be a lack on this camera at first instance but the large sized monitor makes up for it, and it would surprise me if there is anybody who would like to turn back to the fussy little optical viewfinder. It seems no loss to me. Adding to the user's convenience is the presence of a Help function that explains the main menu functions.

Nikon Coolpix S1 - Digital camera review
The Nikon S1 offers a high resolution of 5.1 Megapixels which is more than sufficient to achieve a beautiful photo realistic result. The compact size of the Nikon Coolpix S1 lets you take it with you wherever you go, and to be honest, it would be a shame to leave such a stunning and beautifully designed camera at home, tucked away in one or another drawer. For the time we were in possession of the Nikon S1, it went from one person to the other. All of them focused on this Nikon eye-catcher and the stunning design was talked over again and again with proper respect. What we find of the Nikon S1 in practice, can be read in our Nikon Coolpix S1 digital camera review.

Nikon's $380, 5.1-megapixel Coolpix S1
is no bigger than a deck of cards, even when you're snapping shots. At all times, the 3X optical zoom lens remains entirely within the S1's stylish, brushed aluminum case, so you can put the S1 away without ever having to wait for the lens to retract. This arrangement also enables the S1 to start up very fast. Dominating the back of this ultrathin camera is a 2.5-inch LCD; there's no room for an optical viewfinder. If you're a sometime-photographer, the S1's 15 scene modes will help you get the most from your shots. Several modes can also display guide lines on the screen, permitting better compositions

Your thumb ends up either on the LCD or atop one or more of the controls, which are densely packed to the right of the LCD. Tight as that space is, the control buttons and four-way cursor control are sensibly arranged and easy to operate, even by someone with large digits. The only exception: The small, recessed On/Off button on the model I tested responded only to a hard press of my finger. Several buttons have multiple functions, but you'll soon learn their use in each mode. The telephoto side of the zoom control, for example, doubles as a help button when you're navigating the straightforward on-screen menus. Even setting and releasing the exposure value (EV) control means going into the menus, however. This is not the camera for you if you like advanced settings such as white-balance calibration or exposure bracketing, which are now common on point-and-shoots.

The S1 comes with 12MB of internal memory
Good for about five shots at the camera's highest-resolution setting--and a slot for an SD Card (you have to purchase the card separately). You also get a docking cradle, which the S1 uses for recharging its lithium-ion battery, uploading images to your PC, and displaying your photos on a TV via the included AV cable. You don't need to take the cradle with you when traveling, though, because the power adapter cable also plugs directly into the camera's single connector. In our battery life tests, we took 205 shots from a single charge--below the average number for point-and-shoot cameras we review.

Our tests photos had good image quality with accurate exposure in most lighting conditions. The exception was an underexposed flash portrait of Gloria, our mannequin model. We saw low levels of distortion in our resolution test, and shots reproduced colors faithfully. Image sharpness was about average for a 5.1-megapixel camera. Though I was generally pleased with the results of my informal testing, the shutter speed maxes out at only 1/350 second, making it hard to get sharp shots of active subjects such as pets and small children.

The Nikon Coolpix P2 is a five megapixel digital camera with a 3.5x optical zoom lens. In terms of features this is a fairly standard digital camera, but with one significant difference. The Coolpix P2 has technology built into it that allows you to transmit your images directly to your computer. There is no need to connect your camera using cables. This technology is called wi-fi. For the process to work the computer you use must also be wi-fi compatible. If you are not sure your computer is wi-fi compatible you will need to check with your computer supplier.

The Coolpix P2 is likely to appeal to anyone who is looking for a straightforward digital camera that offers an easy way to transfer images to a computer. You will also have to be prepared to pay a premium for this additional ease of use.

The Nikon Coolpix 4600 digital camera features a 4-megapixel CCD, a 3x optical zoom through a high-quality Zoom-Nikkor lens, and long battery life using convenient AA-size batteries. Plus, with Nikon's exclusive In-Camera Red-Eye Fix, red eyes may be a thing of the past. Nikon's renowned In-Camera Red-Eye Fix technology automatically detects and corrects red eyes in most typical situations without the need to press buttons or select and highlight the eyes in playback.

Nikon's exclusive new D-Lighting feature is another new addition that can turn throwaway shots into frame-able memories. The D-Lighting feature can be selected in Playback mode, automatically compensating for insufficient flash or excessive back lighting in order to obtain balanced exposure throughout the frame. The Coolpix 4600 is also equipped with Blur Warning, another feature unique to Nikon, which alerts the user when a shot is compromised by camera or hand shake, allowing another shot to be taken before leaving the scene.

The Coolpix 4600 is also phenomenally easy to use. This exciting new addition increases the number of Scene Modes to 16.
